The dog ate my homework

It’s just one of those days. Where boredom, restlessness, suffocation, claustrophobia all decide set in at the same time. No, it’s not depression or pms. It’s just one of those days. I suppose I feel like we’re all entitled to these sort of days, where we just don’t feel so hot and would rather be just left alone.

I think I lack direction in so many things and constantly wish there were brighter road signs along the way. Something highlighted on a roadmap would do too. Have you guys ever made a road trip down to the States and realize their road signs are notably superior to ours in Canada? I get really excited when we take road trips down to Seattle because it means I don’t need to bring a map. This isn’t about the grass being greener on the other side. In fact, I don’t think the grass is any greener on the other side. I just simply think that the Americans have really got it better than we do…when they’re trying to drive somewhere…anywhere…in their country.  Why can’t we get the same? Everytime I head out of Vancouver, I’m confused. Or maybe it’s just me. I think a need a GPS system. If I could only just be told when to go straight, where to turn, when to make U-turns when I’ve royally screwed up, I’d be a happy roadtripper in life. Bad analogy I know. But it’s the best I could come up with amidst all this ugly research paper writing.

I know what you’re all (or at least most of you) are going to say. You do have a GPS System. Lisa, you just have to stop turning it off everytime the voice comes on. Yup, I kinda knew that was coming too.

Maybe I’m looking for shortcuts that don’t exist.

Yup, it’s just one of those days.

Next time, I’ll post some new and exciting observation that’s sure to turn heads. Or at least I’ll try.

"That guy's from my fantasy league!"

Nope, that's not something I said...or would ever say, most likely.

I was blatantly reminded again this weekend how different are the gals from the guys. One moment I'm sitting at a nice pub in Johor Bahru (Malaysia) enjoying a cold glass of beer and easy conversation among friends about travelling, collecting coasters, life in Malaysia and Singapore...and the next moment I am bombarded with the excited utterance of "Score! Score, you fools...hey that guy's in my fantasy league!"

...what?

No I haven't quite figured out the meaning of "fantasy league" - but I can tell you that there was a large screen tv behind where I was sitting, dosing the latest exciting game of soccer ("football" for those of you too snobby to let on that you actually understand "soccer").  Alex, our Chinese Malaysian-local was apparently pretty into soccer.

I realize I do the same too - interrupt conversations with seemingly exciting reports about the surroundings. I am addicted to people-watching. I've been criticized many-a-time about the way my eyes wander in the middle of conversations. I suppose you could say that I am like most girls - attracted to shiny things. Although my shiny things aren't actually "shiny" - they just might as well be metaphorically shiny to me. I get bored with what I do and am doing all the time - but prefer to live vicariously through the life of passer-bys.

So now I think I've reached three possible conclusions: a) I have the tendencies of both genders, b) men and women aren't different after all, and c) we are truly different but God gave us enough similarities so we can bear with each other. To illustrate - I summarized some of the points from above:
  • You like beer. We like beer too (although some of us may like other fruitier drinks more than others)
  • You have interests and hobbies. We do too. (Many of them may be identical - reading, chilling, music, travelling, and various sports. People-watching is a sport.)
  • Your interests are jealous ones and may often steal you away from real-life situations. Ours are just the same.
And finally (drum roll, please):

You have fantasy leagues.
We...don't.
...I guess maybe c).

"Welcome back, Lisa!"

...Or at least that's what I would say to myself after a near two-year hiatus from Xanga.

I don't promise anything new, exciting, or improved the second time around.  There's no point in euphemizing my return to blogging as some sort of a fresh start or make-over. For all we know, this may not even be a "return." I have issues with persistence and consistency - we just never got along very well. I blame it on the dynamic ever-changing external environment that is well beyond persistence, consistency, and most of all, me.

Instead, it is simply because I've been handed a lot of free time recently. And when this happens (and it doesn't happen frequently), I don't know what to do with myself. I twiddle my thumbs...and might just bore myself to death. Aside from the more recent phenomenon (that we're all very familiar with) that is facebook, Xanga is probably the most convenient forum for me ramble on about the insignificant things. Besides being a useful past-time, Xanga is probably a good way for me to unload random thoughts, document exciting events, and set in motion crazy but fashionable trends (!).

Maybe it's also because I've recently made a few new Xanga subscriptions. I've also noticed that a couple old Xanga friends have also picked it up again after their own various hiatuses. So, let's celebrate - here is to the fulfillment of an important goal - "setting in motion crazy but fashionable trends"! Yes, I just did that. I jumped on a bandwagon and instantly announced it as my own.  But let's not dwell on that. For all we know, the bandwagon is probably just an illusion since the aforementioned facebook is taking the world by storm.

Instead, I say: let's move on to other more important things - unloading random thoughts and documenting exciting events.
